6.4 Nappy changing

Policy statement

At Thorpe Acre Preschool Playgroup, no child is excluded from participating in our provision who may, for any reason, not yet be toilet trained and who may still be wearing nappies or equivalent. We work with parents towards toilet training, unless there are medical or other developmental reason why this may not be appropriate at the time.

We provide nappy changing facilities, adjust our bathroom provision and exercise good hygiene practice in order to accommodate children who are not yet toilet trained or have toileting accidents.

We see toilet training as a self-care skill that children have the opportunity to learn with the full support and non-judgemental concern of adults.

  • All Key persons are aware, on a daily basis, of the children in their care who require nappies or pull-ups to be changed.
  • We encourage young children from two years to normally wear ‘pull ups’ or other types of trainer pants as soon as they are comfortable with this and if their parents agree.
  • Staff on duty, ensure that children are changed as and when needed.
  • Staff change children within sight of other staff whilst maintaining the dignity and privacy of children at all times.
  • Changing areas are warm and there are safe areas to lay children and no bright lights shining down in their eyes.  There are objects of interest to take the child’s attention.
  • Parents/Carers are asked to ensure that they supply their own children with nappies or ’pull ups’ and changing wipes and keep them replenished for each session.
  • Gloves and aprons are put on before changing starts and the areas are prepared.
  • All staff are familiar with the hygiene procedures and carry these out when changing nappies. These are displayed in both toilet areas.
  • Our staff never turn their back on a child or leave them unattended whilst they are on the changing mat.
  • In addition, key persons are gentle when changing, avoid pulling faces and making negative comments about ‘nappy contents’.
  • We do not make inappropriate comments about children’s genitals when changing their nappies.
  •  In addition, we ensure that nappy changing is relaxed and a time to promote independence in young children.
  • We encourage children to take an interest in visiting and using the toilet; they may just want to sit on it and talk to a friend who is also using the toilet.
  • We encourage children to wash their hands using the soap and paper towels/hand driers provided. They are given time to explore using the hand washing facilities, as they develop their understanding of health and bodily awareness.
  • We do not use anti-bacterial hand wash liquid or soap for young children; young skin is quite delicate and anti-bacterial products kill off certain good bacteria that children need to develop their own natural resistance to infection.  Any hand-washing soaps provided, are specifically for use by young children.
  • Older children access the toilet when they have the need to and are encouraged to be independent.
  • Nappies and ’pull ups’ are disposed of hygienically and the nappy or pull up is double bagged and put in the bin in the adult toilet.  Soiled washable trainer pants or pants will be bagged for the parent to take home.
  • We have a duty of care towards children’s personal needs.  If children are left in wet or soiled nappies/pull ups in the setting, this may constitute neglect and will be a disciplinary matter.  Every effort possible will be made by all staff to ensure that these needs are met.
