6.4 Nappy changing

Policy statement

At Thorpe Acre Preschool Playgroup, no child is excluded from participating in our provision who may, for any reason, not yet be toilet trained and who may still be wearing nappies or equivalent. We work with parents towards toilet training, unless there are medical or other developmental reason why this may not be appropriate at the time.

We provide nappy changing facilities, adjust our bathroom provision and exercise good hygiene practice in order to accommodate children who are not yet toilet trained or have toileting accidents.

We see toilet training as a self-care skill that children have the opportunity to learn with the full support and non-judgemental concern of adults.

Procedures

  • All Key persons are aware, on a daily basis, of the children in their care who require nappies or pull-ups to be changed.
  • Young children from two years should wear ‘pull ups’ or other types of trainer pants as soon as they are comfortable with this and their parents agree.
  • Staff on duty, ensure that children are changed as and when needed.
  • Changing areas are warm and there are safe areas to lay young children if they need to have their bottoms cleaned.
  • Parents/Carers are asked to ensure that they supply their own children with nappies or ’pull ups’ and changing wipes and keep them replenished for each session.
  • Gloves and aprons are put on before changing starts and the areas are prepared.
  • All staff are familiar with the hygiene procedures and carries these out when changing nappies. These are displayed in both toilet areas.
  • In addition, key persons ensure that nappy changing is relaxed and a time to promote independence in young children.
  • Young children are encouraged to take an interest in visiting and using the toilet; they may just want to sit on it at first.
  • Children will be encouraged to wash their hands using the soap and paper towels/hand driers provided. They are given time to explore using the hand washing facilities, as they develop their understanding of health and bodily awareness.
  • Any hand-washing soaps provided, are specifically for use by young children.
  • When key persons change children, they ensure they are gentle, use a positive approach, words and actions.
  • Key persons do not make inappropriate comments about young children’s genitals when changing their nappies.
  • Older children access the toilet when they have the need to and are encouraged to be independent.
  • Nappies and ’pull ups’ are disposed of hygienically and the nappy or pull up is bagged and put in the bin. Soiled trainer pants or pants will be bagged for the parent to take home.
  • We have a duty of care towards children’s personal needs.  Every effort possible will be made by all staff to ensure that these needs are met.
