11.1 Outdoor Awareness Policy

Policy statement

At Thorpe Acre Preschool Playgroup, we encourage children to access the outdoor play spaces freely in all weathers.

We understand it is our duty to protect children from the adverse effects of the weather.  In order to achieve this:

During the spring/summer months:

  • We will ensure that sunshade is provided by shelters and gazebos being placed in the activity areas
  • Children will be encourage to wear sunhats whilst playing outdoors
  • Water is freely available both indoors and outside, for children to help themselves to and children are regularly encouraged to do so.
  • Children are encouraged to take a break from the sun at regular intervals.
  • As part of our curriculum planning, we will aim to develop the children’s knowledge of weather awareness through stories, songs, rhymes and discussions.
  • We will seek outside advice through health services and provide information to parents/carers.

Parents will be notified by letter each year, of the need to ensure their child is:

  • Protected by a high factor sun cream which has been generously applied, at home every day, prior to attending the setting.
  • Wearing suitable clothing which covers their shoulders and that they are provided with a sunhat
  • Wear suitable footwear i.e. sandals with socks, pumps, trainers etc. NO flip-flops, as they do not give enough protection during play.

Children who stay all day

  • May bring a bottle of suitable, spray on, high factor sun protection spray for staff to assist the children to apply.  The container will need to be clearly named and staff will need to be informed. There will be a box available to keep these in.  A record will be kept of when the sun protection is reapplied. Parents please note that sun cream has an average shelf life of 12 months.

During the Autumn/Winter months

  • Children will be helped and encouraged to be independent in finding and wearing  their outdoor clothing.
  • Shelter is provided for children to play under in inclement weather.
  • Children are encouraged to take a break from the cold weather and ‘warm up’.
  • Children will be encouraged to come inside to play during really extreme conditions.

Parents will be notified by letter each year of the need to ensure their child is:

  • Provided with a suitable, warm, named coat, hat, scarf, gloves and footwear.
  • Provided with a spare change of suitable clothing in a named bag

  • The setting keeps a supply of clothing & footwear for all weathers, should children require them.  However, the setting will not be responsible for providing children with sun cream.  All staff are made aware of these policies and procedures.
